If you are taking medication to treat hypothyroidism, pay attention to this information, as it could be important for you since an international laboratory is withdrawing this type of medication from the market due to poor manufacturing practices.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that several drugs used to treat hypothyroidism are being voluntarily withdrawn from the market. The Westminster Pharmaceuticals laboratory used deficient ingredients in the manufacture of levothyroxine and liothyronine, in addition to the fact that it was in disagreement with the current good manufacturing practices of the FDA.

The inspectors found an incorrect formula used to calculate the potency of the active pharmaceutical ingredient, which could lead to some side effects of the medication. The FDA also noted that "it could result in permanent or life-threatening adverse health consequences."

What to do about side effects

If you're taking hypothyroid medication from the company in question, you may experience unusual anxiety due to inconsistent levels of the active ingredient.

The FDA warned in a statement that because these products can be used in the treatment of serious medical conditions, patients taking the recalled drugs should continue to take their medications until they have a replacement product.

Although Westminster Pharmaceuticals has recalled the drugs at the wholesale level, healthcare professionals and patients are encouraged to report any adverse events to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program.

What is hypothyroidism

According to the Mayo Clinic, hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. The function of the thyroid gland is to dump all the hormones produced by it and dump them into the bloodstream to deliver them to the tissues and organs of the body and regulate its metabolism. When the body does not get enough thyroid hormones, a series of imbalances can appear.

how it affects the body

According to the American Thyroid Association, when the body does not receive enough thyroid hormone, the body begins to function more slowly. This can cause a person to begin to feel cold more often, or to begin to forget things more often, become depressed, have dry skin, and feel more tired than usual. In the long term, if hypothyroidism is not treated, it can be associated with fertility problems, heart disease, or brain damage.

To know if a person suffers from hypothyroidism, the only viable way is to have a blood test. With it, the doctor will determine if it is necessary to take medication. In the meantime, there are some symptoms to be aware of and plan a medical check-up:

  • Fatigue

  • Increased sensitivity to cold

  • Constipation

  • Dry Skin

  • Weight gain

  • swollen face

  • Hoarseness

  • Muscular weakness

  • High level of cholesterol in the blood

  • Muscle aches, tenderness, and stiffness

  • irregular menstrual periods

  • Finer and more brittle hair

  • slower heart rate

  • Depression

  • memory impairment

Diet and Hypothyroidism

If you suffer from hypothyroidism, there are some foods that you should avoid and others that you should consume to help your gland function properly.

Avoid or reduce:

  • soy-based foods

  • Broccoli

  • foods with gluten

  • Too much sugar

  • too much fiber

  • sausages

Consume:

  • Foods rich in iodine (such as ocean fish)

  • Green vegetables like spinach and watercress

  • Orange vegetables like carrot and pumpkin

  • Olive oil

  • flax seeds

  • Yogurt

Do not follow any special diet unless directed by your doctor, and do not take iodine supplements unless directed by your doctor. Keep taking care of your body by maintaining healthy lifestyle habits to give your body the opportunity to work properly, with the help of specific medication.
